For many young people, finding the right career path is not a simple process. Cameron Tyeryar, now a Technician at Dovell & Williams, an Indel Power Group Company, faced this challenge before discovering Indel Power Group’s Technician Apprentice Program.
After graduating high school, Cameron did what most young people are encouraged to do today and enrolled in a four-year university. He quickly realized this was not the path for him. Cameron wanted to get out of the classroom and start working. He explored a few different trades – landscaping, construction, and sales – but still had not found the right fit. Cameron was eager to find something he would enjoy as a career.
Through his search, Cameron found a listing for the Technician Apprentice Program on Indeed.com. He had always worked on his own vehicles and enjoyed the satisfaction of fixing something himself but had never worked in a traditional shop.
After applying online, Cameron reached out to the Dovell & Williams Operations Manager, Harry Bigham. Harry helped Cameron with preliminary screenings and set up an interview for Cameron to come in and meet with himself and Justin Arbogast, Service Manager in Glen Burnie, MD.
“I was nervous at first since this would be a new experience for me, but I quickly felt accepted by Harry and Justin. It really helped to know they weren’t looking for someone to come in knowing everything,” explains Cameron.
Harry and Justin were immediately impressed by Cameron’s drive. “We could tell he wanted to get in, learn, and start working, but no one else was willing to give him a chance. We saw the passion he had to succeed and took a chance on him,” recounts Harry.
Since starting at Dovell & Williams in November 2021, Cameron has proven that passion can take you far. “I was given more work a lot quicker than any other job I previously had.” Within two months of starting, Nick Fontaine, Cameron’s mentor and a Technician in Frederick, MD, let Cameron work on a transmission by himself. Cameron remembers feeling proud that Nick had confidence in him and his skills that early in his training.
When asked what it was like to work with Cameron, Nick says “it’s very easy to work with Cameron. He picks up on things quickly, usually on the first try. You can tell that he’s mechanically inclined. It’s nice to know I can count on Cameron in the shop.”
Cameron has made great progress since joining Dovell & Williams one year ago. He is already an Isuzu certified technician and described by local management as “a good person that you can trust to always give 100% and take on anything that’s handed to him.”
Cameron is excited to continue growing at Dovell & Williams. Ultimately, he would like to become Cummins and Allison Transmission certified and hopes to learn as many aspects of the business as possible.
